SHAUN AND SUZAN'S NEW HABIT TO EAT WAY MORE FRUITS AND VEGGIES EVERY DAY (AND GET THEIR KIDS TO HAPPILY DO THE SAME) - UPDATED WITH RESULTS
UPDATE Nov 9, 2015: Yesterday we reached our goal to have smoothies for 100 consecutive days and to create a habit of eating more fruits and vegetables! See the update here, including what specific things we did to stick with it when so many people don't.
"I would never pay $500 for a blender. That's insane. We're going to end up with $500 sitting in the cupboard that only gets dusted off every few months when we feel like having a smoothie."
That's what I said to my wife when she came home from Costco one day raving about the Vitamix blender she'd seen demonstrated there and lobbying me to agree to buying one. I meant every word of it.
Then two weeks later I drove to Costco and bought one. I hadn't changed my mind though. I still wouldn't pay $500 for a blender. However, I'd decided that I would happily pay $500 for our family to dramatically improve our diet in a lasting way. Replacing daily breakfasts of cereal and toast with tasty smoothies full of raw fruits and vegetables was tough to resist.
So I bought the $500 blender and texted my wife a picture of it sitting on our kitchen counter.
We commit to having at least one smoothie every day - preferably for breakfast - for 100 consecutive days in order to create a lasting habit. We will claim a win on day 100 if we feel like we've got a smoothie habit. We make our morning smoothies without effort, on autopilot. And the thought of breakfast without our beloved smoothies makes us twitchy.
Here's what we did to give ourselves the best chance of sticking with it:
I'll post updates to share how it goes and what we learn.
