WE DID IT - AND SO CAN YOU
Yesterday my family and I celebrated reaching our "100 Days of Smoothies" goal that we set over 3 months ago. In doing so, we have replaced breakfasts of mostly processed carbs and sugar with fruits and veggies loaded with nutrients. To be fair, the kids still have cereal sometimes, but they always have their smoothies too.
It was a big accomplishment that we're excited about and proud of. We shared it all over social media and even broadcast the making of the 100th smoothie on periscope. Surprisingly (or maybe not), in many of the comments we got back, friends and family mentioned their own Vitamix blenders that they don't use. Things like:
"I will have to make better use of my Vitamix. I started out using it every day from the beginning, then I stopped."
"I need to get back on track with this. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm impressed! xo"
"U have inspired me! I love my vitamix, but have been inconsistent..."
"I quit after 30 days. So much work for prepping. Lol"
So how did we stick with this really important thing when so many people struggle and eventually stop? Looking back, I think four specific things that we did made creating this habit not only possible, but really pretty easy.
1. We didn't just buy a blender. We decided - intentionally - to start a lifelong habit in order to accomplish a specific goal that is important to us as a family: To be healthier by dramatically improving our diet. Making the commitment initially got us started with a ton of energy and momentum.
2. We made a big deal of it. A huge deal of it. We told everyone about it. I blogged about it. We had a friend draw a sketch of our Vitamix and we put it up on the wall in our kitchen. We see the picture every day and everyone who comes to our house does too. Letting everyone know what we were doing created public accountability. We didn't want to fail at something we'd told everyone about.
3. We set a goal and tracked our progress. As you can see in the picture above, we wrote two sets of numbers from 1 to 100 (one for me, one for my wife) on the drawing that's on our kitchen wall and crossed them off each day. Our kids would often ask if they could cross the days off, so they got in on the action too. My wife and I would check in with each other to make sure we'd had our smoothies for the day if it wasn't crossed off. Keeping track kept it top of mind, which is often half the battle. And after we had a few days under our belts, we were motivated to keep the string alive.
4. We kept our Vitamix on the counter vs. in a cupboard. "Out of sight, out of mind" is true, but so is the converse. By keeping our Vitamix out in plain view we kept it in our attention, making it tough to forget about or ignore.
If we can do it, you can too. We're regular people with regular lives. We just decided to do something and used a couple of simple tricks to make it easy on ourselves.
Have a Vitamix or other blender collecting dust somewhere? Want to get more vitamins and other nutrients, or want your kids to? Try doing what we did and I bet you'll see a difference.
